Lesson 14 – Ableism
Ableism is a term for when people with disabilities (mental and/or physical) are discriminated against negatively for being disabled. Acts of ableism can range from someone making a negative comment targeting someone’s disability, to a building not having ramp access for people in wheelchairs. This leads to people with disabilities having worse outcomes compared to people who are not disabled.
Unfortunately, ableism exists in society both overtly, and covertly, and intentionally and unintentionally. Whether ablism is intentional or not, it is still just as harmful to disabled people.
