Hi, I just joined today. I'm 45 and found out a couple of months ago, after meeting my new partner (who realised almost immediately), that I am almost certainly autistic. I have done lots of research on the subject since then and would like to find out more about which books I should be reading, or which videos I should be watching.

I know loads of useless facts about the things that interest me. I can't cook the simplest of meals without setting fire to the kitchen or poisoning everyone.

Still working it all this out, so not sure what else to say.

Hi Dave!

Welcome to NDSA!

I completely understand the cooking drama. Thankfully I can boil things, I can use a pan, the oven and the microwave, and I can do one thing at a time! My dad's been trying to get me involved in the cooking of more complex things, and I've tried to run away in terror! You'll get the hang of the basics eventually. :)

Hi Dave and welcome to the best club in the world... in my opinion anyway.

Can highly recommend books by Luke Beardon to give you a good, gentle but positive, introduction to autism. You can find them on Amazon and other booksellers if you're not an Amazon fan.

You're a relative youngster compared to me (I got diagnosed when I was 62) so my advice would be to embrace understanding what your challenges are and remember you will also have strengths to balance the challenges - those facts may not be as useless as you think, for example.

Cooking - the biggest issue is not getting distracted during the process. I find I need to follow a recipe closely and use timers until I know it all off by heart. So we eat a lot of the same meals in our family!

Hi Dave,

I’m 47 and was diagnosed as Autistic this year. It never occurred to me (despite never feeling like I fitted in). Like you my partner raised the possibility with me and it’s been a learning journey since then. The online courses through NDSA really helpled plus watching the Chris Packam series about Autistic minds on BBC iPlayer and reading books my Dr Luke Beardon.

Hope this is some help.

James
